What Freedom is Worth

When I was a young girl in Germany my parents took the family to East Berlin (before the wall came down). That experience was both horrifying and inspiring. I remember the museum at the American checkpoint, the pictures of people who were killed in desperate attempts to escape the Communist block. One picture in the museum is seared into my mind, it was a mother holding her baby over the wall just before she dropped her infant into the arms of people on the other side holding their hands up to catch the baby. My eight year old heart cried out in despair for what she must have felt and how valuable freedom for her child was. After touring East Berlin we left and drove back over the boarder through "Check Point Charlie", I looked out the window of our van and saw the American flag waving above the guard station, I cried quietly and then felt a deep feeling of gratitude wash over me. I was so happy to be American and so sad for those who were not. America has been a great beacon of hope and I pray that it can restore its place in the world that it might continue to offer the blessings of freedom in the future.

Old Glory

As a young girl traveling with my family in Yugoslavia I will never forget meeting a local man who we asked for directions, he turned around and I noticed on the front of his bright red shirt was an American flag. He smiled at us and beamed joy to be helping us. He talked in broken English of his love for America and was so kind and helpful. We lived in Germany at the time (my dad stationed there with the Army) and I was taken off guard by this man because in Germany Americans rarely received such a reception. I remember feeling proud that he would wear our flag and that it would mean the same thing to him as it does to me, that he understood that it stood for Freedom wherever it flew.
